crash ending live stack and issue with lock roi
Hi Robin,
I would like to report that I have experimented several time sharpcap to crash, or open a report panel when I was in a timelapse in a planetary live session (sun or jupiter) and did stop timelapse.
I also exprimented several times a crash (return to windows desktop with sc closed) when I have locked the ROI during planetary live stack, then return to live view and when I try to move the mount with ROI lock still selected, then it occurs that the sharpcap freeze and close suddenly returning to desktop.
I was using the version of sharpcap V 4.1.14236 for both crash but I have just seen that the crash when move mount and ROI locked occurs also in the last version V4.1 14247.0

Re: crash ending live stack and issue with lock roi
Hi,
thanks for the report - I am away at the moment and can't easily access the uploaded crash reports, but will dig into this when I return. It's useful to have information like the use of the 'LockROI' option, as sometimes without that sort of information I can be missing key information needed to make the problem happen in testing.
cheers,
Robin

Re: crash ending live stack and issue with lock roi
Hi,
I have been trying to track this down and I'm not sure that I fully understand the problem yet. There was an issue where the timelapse could go wrong in 4.1.14236, but that is at least 95% resolved in 4.1.14247 (I still have one case of a crash report in 14247, but don't quite understand how it could have happened).
I haven't been able to find any crashes that seem to correspond to your mount movement with ROI lock selected, at least not so far.
I am going to upload a new release of 4.1 today - please give that a try when you have a chance, and if you can still get the ROI lock + mount move crash to happen, let me know. If you get an error report prompt, please press the 'Send' button, if it just closes without the error report prompt then we will need to try using 'procdump' to capture a crash dump (search 'procdump sharpcap' and you will find instructions on how to do this).
cheers,
Robin

It should be a very specific case , maybe related to onestep , I got the crash when I am using the warpastron WD-20P (onestep) but last nigth I did not get any crash with the AM5N and I did several time the move when lock (because I forget each time to remove the lock ..).
I will try the new version with onestep next week end (2 places , 2 mounts setup).
kind regards
Re: crash ending live stack and issue with lock roi
Hi Robin,
Still have that issue.
I was using WD-20P doing a timelapse on a ROI of a flare on the sun ... after 1h30 of timelapse, I wanted to move a little bit the roi, so I paused the timelapse but forgot to unselect the lock flag and.... crash ...all lost, I have the 1.3go AVI but seems to be corrupted.
It would be important to fix that issue... it is very frustrating to lose a beautifull timelapse....
kind regards
Olivier

Re: crash ending live stack and issue with lock roi
Hi Olivier,
firstly, if you still have the AVI file, please share it with me (Google drive or similar). It's very likely that I can repair it for you. There is a chance you can do this yourself too using a tool called AviRescue that I created - see this post : viewtopic.php?p=42077&hilit=avirescue2_x64#p42077 . The thing is that you need to know the width/height of the AVI to use that tool, so if that is unknown then I would need to examine the file to try to work it out. In future, it's better to use SER files as they are much robust against this sort of thing - if the software writing an SER file crashes then it is usually possible to read the file without any issues (all that is lost is the frame count and the timestamps of the frames in this case).
Secondly, can you confirm exactly what version of SharpCap you were using and whether you allowed SharpCap to send the bug report. The only bug report I have recently (last week or so) related to the solar system live stacking was with version 4.1.14247, which doesn't contain the extra diagnostics that I had hoped would allow me to track down the issue.
cheers,
Robin

Hi Robin,
I have the version of the 7th April (v 4.1.14254.0) on the pc for planetary , so not the very last one.
It just occured to me once again because it is very easy to fogot to unlock when you want just to reajust the ROI position...
I will try the tool you mention. If does not work I will share the AVi with you.
I will lso install the last version and see if I have the issue. In case to reproduce it is very easy as it is systematic, lock the roi and when in live stack attempt to move the ROI area without unlock and then SC freeze and return to windows with no other message.
Thank you
Kind regards
Olivier

checked the issue is still there with last version v 4.1.14276.0 - 30/04/2026
and thnk you for the rescue tool, I was able to recover the sun flare avi

Re: crash ending live stack and issue with lock roi
Hi,
glad to hear that you managed to recover the timelapse video
I did some more digging into this problem over the weekend and I think I now understand it and have a fix ready to go. It turns out that it depended on the timing of two separate bits of code running when the timelapse is finished. In most cases the timing comes out so that it all just works, but sometimes it is the other way round and you see the crash. The next update (later today hopefully) should fix the problem - at least if my understanding of what was happening is correct
cheers,
Robin

Ah, the fun of tracking down race conditions!
