New Pextax ASCOM Driver and Subframe Issues

#1

Post by rickthegolder »

Hello,

I am making a new ASCOM Driver for Pentax and testing with SharpCap. When I change modes between 6016x4000 and 720x480 I have run into a bug. When I switch to the small image size the ROI is reduced to 720x480 and the NUMX and NUMY are set accordingly. If I switch to 6016x4000 from 720x480 then the ROI is set to 6016x4000 and SharpCap is expecting 6016x4000 but NUMX and NUMY are being set to 720x480. This causes Sharpcap to reject the returned image with a Log error that the returned image doesn't match the expected size. If I switch the ROI to another resolution by hand then it works again. I am using v4.1.13332 64 bit.

Hi Rich,

can I just check that you are changing the mode by using the 'Show' button in SharpCap to show the ASCOM camera option dialog? It looks like after closing that dialog, SharpCap will restart the camera and as part of that will set the NumX/NumY to the minimum of either the selected resolution or the CameraXSize/CameraYSize values.

If that's all correct then as you switch to 720x480 mode, the minimum calculation will set 720x480 into NumX/NumY and also update the resolution in SharpCap to that value. On the other hand, going back will leave NumX/NumY alone at 720x480. The expectation is that the driver will provide a 720x480 ROI image in this case, which will show correctly, then the user will (if they want) switch back to full resolution using the SharpCap capture area selection.

So, I *think* that the problem should go away if you make your driver return an image that matches the ROI selection set into StartX/StartY/NumX/NumY on the ASCOM driver object.

cheers,

Robin

Thanks for the quick reply. I am using the Read Mode button. Sharpcap requests and I return a 720x480 image but Sharpcap complains that it was expecting a 6016x4000 image. You can see that the Capture Area changes to 6016x4000 after switching back to Full Resolution mode (but NumX and NumY are still set with 720x480). If I switch the Capture Area to any new value after changing the Read Mode then it works. I can then switch the Capture Area back to 6016x4000. So leaving NumX/NumY alone at 720x480 is fine but you need to also leave the Capture Area at 720x480.

Hi Rich,

OK, let me check that - the read mode button may not be doing enough to refresh the status of the camera in a consistent way.

Hi Rich,

I found one thing that might have been the cause of the mismatch after changing the read mode - please could you re-test with the very latest 4.1.13417 and see if that helps.

If not, is there any chance that you could make a bodged version of your ASCOM driver that has all the API but just generates random image data without needing to have the real camera available? Then I could test that myself and debug what is going on. Once upon a time I had a Pentax K10D, but that got sold on years ago sadly.

cheers,

Thanks so much for the update. I tested the latest version. Unfortunately, it still doesn't work. If I change the ROI back to 720x480 then everything is fine. I will try to put together a log file that shows what is going on.

Attached is the full log from Sharpcap. I switch to 720x480, then back to 6016x4000, try to take a picture, then switch to ROI to 720x480 then successfully take a picture. When the camera size is changed from 720x480 back to 6016x4000 you set the StartX and StartY to zero. When I reselect the zoomed ROI the StartX and StartY are set to the appropriate values: 2648 and 1760.

Hi,

I think I will have to debug this (or at least some simulator of it) to understand what is going on fully - the log gives some pointers, but it doesn't let me understand the reasons behind what is going on.

Is your project open source? Can I look at/tinker with the code to try to make a version that runs without needing a camera plugged in?

I can see that when the mismatch occurs, SharpCap is expecting a full size (6016x4000) image in mono/raw (one colour plane), but is getting 480x720x3, so a colour image. I expect there is a problem there with the mismatch in the image type as well as the size. Are you changing the SensorType as the readout mode changes? SharpCap may not be checking that on a readout mode change.

cheers,

Thanks for the reply.

The code is available here:
https://github.com/richromano/ASCOMPentaxCameraDriver

Sharpcap is awesome by the way.

All the best,

Hi Robin,

I did some more debugging. Attached is my log file.

I switch the read mode to 720x480 and then back to 6016x4000. I then took a picture and the log on your end is below (bold important points): in the bold you request 720x480 and then reject the resolution as too small.

I return 6016x4000 as the camera size in my log file but in your printout the max size is 720x480
PanTilt Inconsistent - ROI={Width=720, Height=480}, MaxSize={Width=720, Height=480}, Pan: 0 to 5296, Tilt: 0 to 3520

As I said, in the end your reject the image because it is too small.
Warning 12:07:23.309281 #28 Dropping frame due to pixel count mismatch - 3d source array (479x719x2), source had 345600 pixels, dest 24064000 in bool SharpCap.Cameras.ASCOM.NewCameraProxy.ValidateDataSize(Array source, BufferFrame target)

If I force the code to return the correct size Sharpcap continues but the image is scrambled like it was expecting a different image size.

I do not change the sensor type when switching. In both cases it is Color.

I really appreciate your help.

Rich
