I'm a two week EAA novice. On my first night out with a camera managed to get a really nice image and I inadvertently just clicked SAVE and not Save as it appears.
After some confusing attempts to do something with the Fits File I have ended up with a .tif file.
I downloaded Fits Liberator but its over my head and leaves my color image in Mono.
When I click on that file it opens the Sharpcap program leading me to hope there is a feature in Sharpcap to do something with it ?
I dont see it in the header options.
Thanks
Sharpcap and a .tif file

Re: Sharpcap and a .tif file
Hi,
if you have a FITS file that you want to use, the best bet is to find a different program to use to convert it to TIFF or PNG. FitsLiberator is only really good for a quick look at the file.
Some programs that you can try
* PIPP (Planetary Imaging Pre Processor) - although it says planetary in the title, it is happy converting file formats for you
* GIMP (Gnu Image Manipulation Program) - this will load FITS files and then it is a bit like photoshop (but for free). It will certainly let you save as TIFF
I'm sure there are many others
In a pinch, you can re-load the FITS file in SharpCap (using the folder monitor camera or the 'Test Camera 1') and then re-save to TIFF
hope this helps,
Robin

Re: Sharpcap and a .tif file
Sorry if I was not clear:
I have a tif file
and when I click on it - my computer opens Sharpcap , even though I dont have Sharpcap listed as a possible image program. I was wondering if Sharpcap had a feature that did something with tif files.
I've have hunted the menus etc and dont find it myself.
Seemed odd that without being assigned that my computer thinks that SC is the program for it.
Thanks and Again Sorry if I explained my question poorly.
(I'm almost 2 weeks into Eaa and Sharpcap and I'm so Amazed at what I have seen even though I have so little idea what I'm doing)

Re: Sharpcap and a .tif file
Ah, OK....
No, SharpCap shouldn't be set up to open files like that and will not set itself up to open TIFF files. However you can persuade Windows to open just about any file with just about any program if you try hard enough (using the 'open with...' option in the right click menu). Of course the problem is that opening the file then doesn't work unless the program you chose was designed to open that file.
Anyway, the way out of this is to pick a TIF file, right click on it, click 'Open with', then 'Choose another app', You should see a list of applications that you could use to open the TIF like image processing applications - tick the box at the bottom that says 'always use this app to open tiff files', choose the app you want and click OK.
That should fix things so that your TIFF files open in the right program.
cheers,
Robin

Re: Sharpcap and a .tif file
Thank you.
I only signed up for PRO about 2 weeks ago and there are so many features its Amazing but also overwhelming for a Eaa astro image novice. I have a lot to learn.
Thank you for this great program. I never thought I would be seeing what I have seen. Even the first night out brought a new excitement to Astronomy after eyepiece viewing for 30+ years.
