AI Generated Capture Plan for NGC6888

Post by turfpit »

NGC6888 (Crescent Nebula) currently for me (mid-September) transits around the same time as astronomical dark commences. I used Copilot to provide an outline plan using my equipment. In the attached document, red text was the input to the AI. The generated replies were pasted into the document (Word, which was exported as a PDF).

Text supplied by me:
  • ngc 6888 transit
  • vixen 81sd, atik 314l+, 0.67x reducer
  • Ha/OIII filters capture
  • Dithering
  • SharpCap full capture plan FITS
  • PixInsight processing

The attached 9 page document was produced:
ngc 6888 transit.pdf
(332.62 KiB) Downloaded 2 times

I then asked Copilot to produce:
  • NGC6888 Capture Manual
which gave:
NGC6888 Capture Manual.pdf
(151.23 KiB) Downloaded 3 times

Some useful facts which emerge from the 9 page summary:
  • longer subs for OIII over Ha
  • OIII is moon sensitive
  • if moon >60% prioritise Ha
  • recommended total capture time
  • dither frequency when guiding
  • consider RGB stars
All the information gathered was useful and very much reflects what it has taken me 10 years to acquire via reading plus trial and (mostly) error. The PixInsight workflow was reasonable given my 4 years experience with the software.

I had to explicitly specify FITS, as the first offering from the AI suggested capturing SER files - not really good for deep sky.
