Live stack color balance

#1

Post by Gfischer »

Hi all,
I use the lightning bolt color balance button while live stacking then all is good. After several more frames the color balance shifts again. I push the button again and all is good. Is there anyway to automatically correct color balance?

Hi,

most likely what is going on is that the colour balance of the stack is shifting for one reason or another, so that the adjustments that worked a few frames ago are no longer correct.

The way this sort of thing can happen (as an example) is if some thin cloud appears during the stack - the early parts of the stack are taken with clear sky and have one level and colour of background. Once the cloud appears, the background changes - brighter and perhaps a different colour due to increased reflection of light pollution. With each new frame added to the stack, the background of the stack will change as the mixing fractions of the old darker background and the new brighter background shift.

If it is this sort of thing going on then there isn't much to do about it - you could restart the stack which *might* help if the new conditions are steady, but if they are still varying then that won't necessarily help.

cheers,

Robin

Hi robin,
Don’t you ever take a day off :D . This shift happens without any visual changes. I do notice as the stack gets longer the shifts get much smaller. Have you ever considered a “lock” button where you get your curves where you want them. Then as each new frame comes in sc adjusts levels to keep to locked values? Just a
I used sc for the eclipse worked perfectly.

Hi,

I usually prefer to do a little every day, rather than take more days off and have a big pile of questions to reply to on my return....

I see where you are coming from with the idea of a stretch that follows any changes in the brightness peaks of the histogram - right now I have some upcoming changes to live stack colour balance and stretching, so I would like to get those published first before changing other things!

Good to hear that the eclipse worked out well for you - both in terms of clear skies and the software working!

cheers,

Robin
