[RESOLVED] SharpCap 4.1/4.0 fails to start. No errors are shown, and /dump option produces no .dmp or log files.

I have attempted run multiple versions of SharpCap but none ever successfully start. Installing and uninstalling appears to complete normally but
any time I execute SharpCap.exe or run it from the Start menu an hourglass appears on the mouse pointer for a few seconds then disappears. No log files, dump files, splash screen or application windows are ever created. The result is exactly the same for all versions tried with and without holding down Ctrl key. I am using an Svbony SV205 camera. The result is the same with and without the camera being connected to the computer.

Hi,

sorry to hear that you are having such an awkward problem. Based on the fact that you are not seeing a dump file created and the way that you see the hourglass briefly then nothing, I think SharpCap may be failing very early in application startup - before things like the crash dumps or the log files get initialized.

Please can you try running SharpCap from the command line with the additional parameter '/debuglaunch'. That enables some message boxes to show during application startup, and from which ones show up and what appears in them, I can work out how far the code got before hitting an error, which then helps narrow down what the error might be (and even, maybe, what is causing it!).

Just take a screenshot (or jot down the text) for each message box that appears, then press OK to move on to the next stage.

Ok, thanks for that - the place where it stops narrows it down to 2 or 3 lines of code, but no obvious reasons why those lines of code would fail for you but not for everyone else

I will add some more diagnostic checks in that area for the next update on Monday that will hopefully detect the error and show something that will help me identify the issue.

There appears to be no change in the error condition after updating .NET

I was able to work around it by setting the environment variable COR_ENABLE_PROFILING: 0

Hi,

good to hear that you tracked down the cause, which is definitely a weird one. I would only expect that setting to be altered on a PC used for software development. If you haven't used your PC in this way and have no idea how this has become set, it would be worth doing a full malware scan of the PC, as a quick search reveals that setting and related ones have been used for loading persistent malware (https://redcanary.com/blog/threat-detec ... rsistence/)
