Question on two-monitor view

#1

Post by Moonstruck »

Robin,
I just purchased a large additional monitor (27" screen) for doing EAA. I will be using it for public outreach. I plugged in the monitor to my laptop and selected "two monitor view" in Sharpcap. Both screens (my laptop and the new monitor screen) show both the image and Sharpcap controls. How do I get just the image on the big screen, and the image and controls on my laptop?

Right click on the Windows desktop and then click on
Display Settings"
Under "Multiple Displays" select
"Extend these displays" from the drop-down menu.

Now go into SC and select "Two Monitor View"

and you should be good to go.

I got the image (only) on the big monitor and the image and controls on my laptop like I wanted (thanks for the tip). However... now I can't figure out how to make the image on the big monitor the same size as the desktop monitor's image when I zoom in. For example, if I zoom into the image on the desktop screen (owl nebula in this case), the nebula image on the big monitor is still small. (See image in link below).

I would like to be able to show a zoomed-in image on the big monitor the same relative size (enlarged) as it appears on the laptop monitor (minus controls). Is that possible? Thanks again for your help.

Hi,

the zoom levels of the two displays are not linked, as that would behave oddly when the available space on the main screen doesn't match the available space on the second display. The way to zoom the second display is to use the mouse controls for zooming, which are the standard CTRL key + mouse scroll wheel that is used by many applications. Just do that with the mouse over the second display (you might have to click on it first) and you should be able to adjust the zoom and, if necessary, use the scroll bars to find the right part of the zoomed image.

cheers,

Robin

I encountered a similar problem when doing EAA.

I am in a dome with the scope etc. and the second monitor is outside with the public so it is not possible to see what is happening on the second screen. If I am not quick enough to get going then my second screen turns itself off and if I haven't realised then when I toggle 2 monitors then Sharpcap goes full screen on my laptop and I can't get the controls back, I have to close Sharpcap and start again.

It is only operator error and I have to remember to turn on the second screen before I use 2 monitor view but I thought it might be helpful to share.

By the way F12 on my Lenovo ideapad 320 just turns the screen brightness up, it doesn't matter what combination of keys I press, the screen just gets brighter. Also I have yet to find a way of making my second screen stay on for longer as that would help but a big Post-It note to remind me seems to work for now.

Hi,

the expected behaviour is that SharpCap should go full screen on the monitor that is not currently holding the main SharpCap window, so it's odd that it is going onto the screen that already has the main SharpCap window on it... Mind you, it's also a bit odd that you have access to two monitor mode when the second monitor is not available - the button should disable in that situation. Maybe it is correct when SharpCap is started but doesn't update properly if a monitor is added or removed - I will check...

On laptops, if the function keys do stuff like volume changes and so on, there is usually an 'Fn' key somewhere that will toggle them back to the more normal operation (ie press Fn+Ctrl+F12). There is also usually a keystroke combination that toggles the default behaviour, so that the function keys would then work as F1-F12 without Fn pressed and you would then need to press Fn+F12 to change the brightness. That's usually one of the first things I do on any laptop!

cheers,

I was just posting information to help anyone also experiencing my scenario. But thank you for your swift response.

OK This fun!

Lenovo laptop is running v4.1.121946 and two monitor view is available even if I have no other screen connected. The drop down menu says Ctrl+F12 toggles two monitor view on & off but ctrl+F12 just changes the screen brightness.
Paying close attention I can see that the borders of the screen do change colour when I use fn+F12 so I realised that fn+F12 toggles between daytime and night time colour scheme. F12 on it's own or in combination with ctrl just changes the screen brightness (using alt or shift also has no effect on what F12 does). Fn+F11 wrestles back the controls so there must be some cross over between full screen and two monitor view.

Right forget that last sentence. I'm back to stuck on two monitor view only now I've frozen the whole thing. Too many key presses in quick succession.

I shall update to the newest version and hope that solves the problem.
