It's a new computer so no conflicts with old software. I tried uninstalling reinstalling, rebooting, installed .net desktop runtime 8. Nothing is plugged in to the PC. Holding ctrl does nothing. There are no longs I can find. I purchased sharpcap pro.

Hi,
sorry to hear you are having problems like this, there are a few things you can try.
1) Uninstall and then reinstall SharpCap - make sure you have the latest version from our downloads page. Now and then an install can go badly for some reason, but a reinstall can often resolve that sort of problem
2) Temporarily disable any non-Microsoft security software (antivirus etc) that you are running. Some antivirus can be very aggressive and cause all sorts of weird problems. This tends to happen most with the 'free to use but they want you to upgrade to the paid version' antivirus like Avast or Avira.
3) Look to see if the SharpCap icon is appearing in the taskbar, even if you don't see the main application window. If the icon appears in the taskbar and stays there then SharpCap is running, but the main window is lost somehow off-screen. If this is the case, you can rescue the window by
* clicking on the icon in the taskbar
* Press Alt+Space
* Press one of the arrow keys on the keyboard
* move the mouse
4) SharpCap may be crashing early in the start up of the application before it shows any windows or even the splash screen. Hold down CTRL+SHIFT and while holding them down double click on the SharpCap shortcut on the desktop. CTRL+SHIFT being held down makes SharpCap report progress during the early parts of the application startup by showing little (slightly cryptic) message boxes on screen. If you do this, note down the messages you see (things like 'Stage 3: true' etc) and report them here. What appears helps me understand how far the startup of the application got and what might be going wrong.
Hope this helps,
Robin

Gemini solved it for me, after many iterative troubleshooting steps. This seems to be a prerequisite that may not be installed on a new computer.
Repair/Install Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable:
This provides the vcruntime140.dll and msvcp140.dll files that hostfxr.dll relies on.
Link: Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Latest: https://www.google.com/search?q=vc_redist.x64.exe
Crucial: When you run this, if it says "Modify Setup," click Repair. If not, click Install.

Hi,
can I ask you what version of Windows and what version of SharpCap you were trying? SharpCap 4.1 includes that runtime and should automatically install it as part of the installation of SharpCap if it is missing or the version installed is too old, so something didn't quite work right and I need to investigate.
cheers,
Robin

Hi,
thanks for that - I had another report of the same thing yesterday and on digging deeper it turned out it was an issue with that particular version on some machines. I have now removed that version from the downloads page and put up a new version (the new version properly installs the Microsoft redistributable, whereas the problem one skipped the install under some conditions when it was really necessary).
thanks and sorry for the problem,
Robin
