PlayerOne Saturn-M SQR has 'tearing' at sides of image

#1

Post by Paulinho »

Hi, all.
I have some strange tearing of images using my Saturn-M SQR in SharpCap that does not occur with other cameras and does not occur in FireCapture or NINA (see image attached - it's lowres, but shows the problem).
The amount of tearing seems to depend on the brightness of the image. For example, a large portion of the screen is affected with the moon (as per attached example), but only margins near the edge of the image for stars.

Setup:
-Mele 4C running Windows 11.
-SharpCap 4.1.14013.0 (was happening on the previous version too)
-Other software: NINA, Fire Capture
-Other cameras: ASI585MC, ASI2600MM

What I have tried:
-Tried three different USB cables and the problem persists.
-Installed latest PDK for PlayerOne cameras and the problem persists.
-Turned off Graphics Card acceleration option (in case it was interfering in some way) and the problem persists.
-Tried different frame rates and the problem persists.
-Tried different ROI sizes and the problem persists.

-Tried Saturn-M with FireCapture - works perfectly
-Tried Saturn-M with NINA - works perfectly

-Tried the ASI585MC and ASI2600MM in SharpCap - both work perfectly

Grateful for insights into any possible causes and guidance as to how to correct it.
Many thanks.
Paul

Hi Paul,

you have a SharpCap feature called 'Planet/Disk Stabilization' turned on in the preprocessing section on the right. This is designed for planetary imaging and tries to keep the planet steady by shifting the image left/right/up/down. You may have turned it on previously for planeteray imaging, or just to try it out. Turn this to 'Off' and you should be fine.

The reason that this is enabled for this one camera is that SharpCap remembers the camera settigns you last used on a camera-by-camera basis. This includes both the commonly used options like resolution, bit depth, exposure and gain as well as more esoteric ones like the preprocessing ones. 99% of the time this is useful, but sometimes it can catch you out. One thing you can do to go back to defaults is to close the camera and then re-open it with the CTRL key pressed - this stops SharpCap from reloading the last used settings on a one-time basis.

cheers,

Robin

Many thanks, Robin.
That was it.
Indeed, I had used this option for planets and had no clue of the effect in other situations.
All the best.
