RAW 16 white balance issue

#1

Post by JerryG »

Is there a way to correct the colors in Live View when using RAW16 as the capture format? I can manually adjust or auto adjust the white balance in RGB24, but when I am using RAW the colors look very yellow/green.

I tried moving the Tint and Temperature sliders, but it appears to do nothing. I've tried every debayer preview option and, although this did change the colors, couldn't get the moon looking white. The last thing I tried was using the CA/Synthetic Blue options, but it also changed the colors in a nonusefuk way.

Any help would be appreciated because I'd rather use the greater bit depth of RAW16 than RGB24. The camera in question is a Skyraider ds26cTEC

Thanks :)

Hi,

with your Mallincam camera (and with similar models from other brands based also manufactured by ToupTek), there isn't currently a way to adjust the white balance when using RAW8 or RAW16 mode.

The way to deal with this is to use the correct mode (RAW16 for deep sky, RAW8 for solar/lunar/planetary) and to leave the colour balance as it is when capturing. You then fix the colours in post-processing of the image (after stacking, etc). This is actually a better way to work, since you end up saving the images straight from the camera with no adjustment and can then tweak the adjustment as much as you need to in post-processing. If you use the white balance on the camera then you end up saving files with that adjustment applied, which cannot be undone fully.

cheers,

Robin
