Change to default save directory does not stick
Posted: Mon May 20, 2024 3:14 pm
I want all my captures to be saved on E:/ which is a memory stick. When I change this in settings and it will stick for the session but goes back to the original the next time I run SharpCap.

Hi Mike,
I suspect that SharpCap is testing the 'E:\' drive on startup and either finds it missing or cannot write to it for some reason - that causes SharpCap to reset the capture folder to the default as a way of avoiding being stuck when starting a capture without a valid folder to save it to.
Have a look in the SharpCap log (Help menu, Show Log) after starting the second time to see if there are any entries warning about the capture folder being invalid and being set back to default - the log entries should show the reason that the 'E:\' is being rejected.
cheers,
Robin
PS - you may wish to change your username to something other than your email address - otherwise you could get lots of junk emails if 'spammers' scan this web site and pick up your email address. If you want to do that, let me know the preferred new username and I will make the change for you.

I see no reason why you cannot accept E:\ as the default capture directory and issue a warning that the drive is not available if the memory stick is not inserted. What would you do if, for example, if the default was C:\Sharpcap\Captures and it was not available at startup? I assume you would issue a warning so the user could correct the problem.

Hi Mike,
I will look into prompting rather than just changing it silently. Right now, SharpCap will try to create the default folder if it is missing and only if it fails to create will it complain - the idea is to make things work without bothering people where possible, but I see your point.
cheers,
Robin
