Findng distant objects

#1

Post by Ehud »

Hi,
Is there a way to look for very far galaxies? - Using the Deep Sky annotation tool' I can trace galaxies in the EAA stack and then I can loo for their distance. But can I do the reverse - find galaxies by distance and then go to try and EAA on them?
Thanks.

Hi,

there is a *lot* of astronomy data on the Simbad/Vizier website at https://simbad.cds.unistra.fr/simbad/ - thousands of research datasets of various descriptions that you can query, inspect and use. For instance the catalog of star data I use for plate solving index building comes from there...

In amongst it all, there are almost certainly going to be catalogs that contain galaxy distance, brightness, co-ordinates, etc. One that I came across was the GLADE dataset : https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/viz-bin/c ... 5#/article - if you click on the 'Vizier' tab on the right then you can query the dataset and if you want apply constraints such as brighter than magnitude 15, declination between 30 and 50, etc.

Once you have the co-ordinates of an interesting target, you can use them in the SharpCap 'GOTO Target/Co-ordinates' tool. For the more distant/dimmer galaxies, SharpCap will not have the details in its catalog, but you can create and add custom catalogs if you want - see https://docs.sharpcap.co.uk/4.1/#Custom ... %20Objects

cheers,

Robin
