opening this camera via ascom may reduce performance

So I have just purchased a ZWO ASI664 camera. When I plug it in to my EQ6 mount NINA recognises it, however when I try to open it with Sharpcap it isnt listed in the camera tab.

If I then ASI Camera (1) it opens but with the following screenshot pop up.

Connecting to it via ASI Studio seems to also work fine.

Any ideas?

TIA

Matt

Hi Matt,

hopefully the cure for this is as simple as updating to the very latest version of SharpCap 4.1 from our downloads page (https://www.sharpcap.co.uk/sharpcap/downloads). Versions since 4.1.11974 have included an update from ZWO published in March that should add support for your camera. Older versions will have older versions of the ZWO software and may not detect brand new models of camera.

The warning you get when opening via ASCOM is telling you that you won't get full control of the camera or be able to use the full frame rate of the camera when using it via ASCOM. That just triggers off of the name/brand of the ASCOM camera driver, so will happen for all ZWO cameras when you use the ASCOM driver.

cheers,

Robin

So, does that mean I still wont get the full frame rate though?

Hi,

you won't get the full frame rate if you open via the ASCOM Cameras options - ASCOM is really designed for deep sky and the way the camera is controlled via ASCOM means that the frame rate probably won't get much above 3 to 10 fps.

If the device is showing up in the 'ZWO ASI Cameras' section of the menu now after the update then select it from there and you should have full control of the camera and full frame rate.

cheers,

Robin
