SharpCap & Eclipse image registration

#1

Post by hrhett »

Hi All,

I imaged over 1,000 frames of the eclipse Monday. Because I used an alt-az mount I constantly had to recenter the sun/moon which led to the resulting stack being unregistered. I'm looking for a tool that can process the 1,000 images and register them knowing that reference points will vanish as the moon transits the sun.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Howard,

I haven't ever tried stabilizing a video like that, so not sure if any of the usual tools would succeed, but would be worth giving them a try. You might find that the best bet is to process the images in batches (say stabilize 50 or 100 frames at a time). In that shorter section, the features would change less so an automated tool might do a good job - you could then try a more manual process to line up the batches with each other.

I think I'd try PIPP as a first go - it has planet and surface alignment modes for stabilization, which might help.

cheers,

Robin
