WIFI connection

Post by ScopesNC »

Would it ne possible to have SharpCap connect to the mount via the mounts WIFI ? iOptron and others are now broadcasting out a WIFI sign one can connect with. Might this be a way for us in the future to connect?

Hi,

I wouldn't be surprised if some scopes already worked that way - with the ASCOM driver talking to the telescope itself over Wifi. That's the way it would have to work, via a manufacturer supplied ASCOM driver, rather than direct from SharpCap (too many different mount makes and models out there for application developers like me to keep up - that's what ASCOM is for).

Mind you, I wouldn't really recommend wireless connection of any sort, as it tends to glitch far more frequently than wired connections do - unfortunately the people who do develop the ASCOM drivers haven't caught up with this yet, so the ASCOM drivers tend to report the failure to communicate straight away rather than having a 'retry, reconnect, retry' strategy.

cheers,

Robin
