Binning Recommendations

#1

Post by Rocket_Guy »

Hi Robin,

I've been reading a bit about binning lately and it seems that there may be ways to calculate the optimal binning for a particular camera for a given set of sky conditions in order to give the best combination of sensitivity and sharpness. Is this something that could be implemented into Sharpcap such that the code could display a recommended binning to use given the sky conditions and the camera being used? Thanks.

Hi Bill,

my take on it is that with CMOS cameras there is no real benefit to binning apart from reduced file size. Unlike CCD where binning can pay dividends in helping suppress read noise, binning on CMOS is just a mathematical operation of averaging 4 (or 9 or 16) pixels. You can do it when capturing and get the smaller files, or you could do it later in processing and get identical results.

So, the whole question rather boils down to

* are you over-sampling (ie pixel scale significantly less than 1 arc sec
* do you care about file size

If both come out as yes then binning might be for you, otherwise not.

cheers,

Robin
