But surely they are designed to be used 'outside'?

Well yes, but that doesn't mean there cannot be a fault that is somehow related to the temperature.
As an example, a bad connection somewhere could be fine in the warm, but once the hardware gets cold and everything shrinks a bit, it may get a little worse and cause issues.
This is all speculation, but worth investigating. Try testing indoors and outdoors with exactly the same setup and see if that gives you reliably the banding when cold and not when warm.
