Help! I have no idea what's going on! Mods? Anyone?

I've been astroimaging for a few years now. Nothing complicated. No deep sky. Just planets. So I go to capture Jupiter for the first time this year - everything seems to be work8ng fine - have a ZWO asi 178 color camera - the image of Jupiter came up fine - focused and centered it - hit start capture - counter started ticking along - got to 5000 frames and stopped - went into capture file and...... NO VIDEOS. THERE WERE NO VIDEO FILES. Did it several times. restarted the software. Rebooted my laptop.. Using version 3.2. All my presets are fine. All my defaults are fine. What the heck is going on? Help!

Hi,

were there *any* files saved into the SharpCap Captures folder (perhaps in a sub folder rather than right inside the SharpCap Captures top level folder)? I suspect that you might have ended up capturing into SER format, which is a specialised video format for planetary/solar/lunar imaging. SER files won't play with normal video software, but will open in stacking applications and there is a nice application called SERPlayer to let you play them back on Windows.

The only other thing that I can think of is that perhaps you ran out of disk space, but you should have received an error if that happened. SharpCap 3.2 is a bit old now (the latest is 4.0), but I don't recall any missing capture file bugs of that sort of nature in it.

cheers,

OK, so I didn't know what SER files were or why the program switched to saving to SER but I see that PIPP handles SER files so I guess I`m OK?

Hi,

yes, you should be OK if you have found the SER files - you can load them into PIPP and work with them. AutoStakkert, Registax, etc also handle SER files.

SER is a simpler format than AVI - it means it is quick to write files to it, and because it is simple there are hardly ever any compatibility problems that you sometimes get with AVI where an AVI file will work in one program but not in another.

cheers,

Robin
