FINALLY!!!! Many thanks to all for your help and suggestions! Robin's suggestion to install the errant version on a separate computer, and then copy the needed .msi file from that computer over to the problem computer worked great. The old version was removed and now I have installed the latest Sharpcap version. Everything is now working great. Life is good! Great to have some knowledgeable on your side providing help when needed.

Glad we got there in the end. The problem is that MSI (in spite of being the default way of getting software installed on Windows PCs) is fundamentally a horrible, evil thing. There is no guarantee for instance that uninstall will undo all the changes that install makes, or that repair really repairs something. I have encountered a driver pack from a camera manufacturer that works fine, unless you uninstall it, in which case it wipes your computers PATH settings and suddenly half of windows stops working properly at the next reboot...
