Setting up the scope - Newbie

#1

Post by woldsweather »

Apart from another post in the forum where SharpCap isn't responding or responding very slowly cansomeone advise me on the sequence of setting up the scope to image?

I do PA quickly and I think accurately with Polemaster. What next? I have tried platesolving next but it mostly doesn't solve. I am going to use Stellarium to goto so if after Polar alignment I then issue a goto Alcor/Mizar fro example, then last night it to a totally wrong part of the sky and on one occasion ended up pointing towards the ground.

Hi

I don't know if you do this, but just in case.
After you do PA with Polemaster, slew to a random piece of sky away from the Pole Star. Set your mount to tracking or guiding, and only then do the Plate Solving. It should solve and sync then.

OK and then slew to a known object perhaps to check? eg Jupiter at the moment. If I do this and it does not solve despite finding 800 objects (eg last 2 evenings) what can I do then?

It can happen that there are too many stars for a plate solve. If with 800 you get no solve, try with a lower exposure time ad/or lower gain.

I tried every combination between half a dozen and 800+ but wouldn't solve.

Hi,

best thing to do is to save an image (press the snapshot button) and then post it here (or post a link via dropbox/google drive/etc if it is too large to upload). Then we can have a look and give advice.

thanks,

Robin - Any thought on my other post whereby it takes 10-20 seconds for a drop down menu eg exposure/tracking to appear, and in fact in tracking I cant get it to appear though I can switch sidereal on in EQMOD though again the response is sluggish. Theres no chance of moving the mount L/R /up/down.

Hi,

yes - not a screenshot, but an actual saved PNG or FITS file captured using the 'snapshot' button.

cheers,
