Is it possible to use a Canon 350D with SharpCap?

I have found very few (and confusing) posts on the internet, and would appreciate a definitive answer.

Hi,

SharpCap does not support DSLR cameras directly, but there is an ASCOM driver that can talk to some Canon, Nikon and other DSLR cameras - ASCOM.DLSR - see https://github.com/vtorkalo/ASCOM.DSLR

I'm afraid I have no idea if it supports the 350D. I have used it with a 650D and 700D.

cheers,

Robin

https://www.canon.co.uk/support/consume ... 20(64-bit)

The Canon 350D belongs in the era of Windows XP. I have a Canon 7D MK11 which works under Windows 10 64-bit with SharpCap 4 and the ASCOM DSLR driver. I also own a Canon 350D which is not detected with the above setup.

Thanks Dave, that's good to know. It could save me a lot of time.

Are you aware of any workarounds that CAN make the 350D play with SharpCap? (I have a virtual machine running xp which could be pressed into service.)

  • Sharpcap 4 needs Win 10, 8.1 or 7 (+SP1)
  • Sharpcap 4 offers a 'still mode' which helps with a DSLR camera
  • The ASCOM DSLR driver works with Sharpcap 4 (not earlier versions)
  • Canon removed the 350D from their SDK years ago, I remember the 350D stopping working with an older version of Nebulosity
  • Sharpcap no longer supports XP (puts you back in Sharpcap 2.9 days)
  • A virtual machine just adds another layer of pain
You might get it working with an older version of software such as APT https://aptforum.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=365

https://www.project-nightflight.net/Ast ... h_DSLR.pdf used a Canon 350D but using direct capture from camera to the CF card.

Oh dear, and this I think may result in spending a very great deal of time!

I'm beginning to feel that this should be a back burner project, as there seems no easy solution. I've had a 350D spare body for some time, I thought I might be able to utilize its fairly large sensor to good effect. But it seems, not by using SharpCap.

I guess the only way to use it "easily" is going to be by peering through its viewfinder, while connected to the OTA, praying, then pressing the shutter release cable, downloading the image from the card (which is possible), then trying again.

You forget how easy SharpCap makes it all appear!

At least it wont require a night in the darkroom with chemicals and a red lantern.

Thanks for your help - it certainly points the magnitude of the undertaking.
