Smart Histogram use with Celestron / ZWO rig?

After my first shooting / stacking / image processing experience (seen here)I feel the need for a more accurate way of determining exposure times and number of subs than just guessing (which I did for this one). Even though I have a complete ZWO kit for my Celestron 8" (ASIair/533/174mm/OAG), I think the Smart Histogram function of Sharpcap would be a good way of determining these functions.
