Nebula Photos on Superbowl Sunday

#1

Post by wcblack7 »

Instead of watching the same old Superbowl, I took my 80mm APO out for first light.
Got it for Christmas, but this was the first night with good weather!

These were taken near Hiram, GA in the US (N33d50m, W84d50m) using SharpCap 3.2 Live Stack with the following set-up:
ASI294MC-Pro
AstroTech 80EDT
AstroTech 0.8 focal reducer
Baader Moon & Skyglow filter
LXD 75 mount, no autoguiding (polar aligned with SharpCap Pro Polar Align tool)

No post processing, other than converting to JPG and additional color balancing (still off, I'm sure).
Used live stack histogram stretch in SharpCap and the following camera settings:

Great Orion
- Stack of 48 frames
- Binning=1
- Capture Area=4144x2822
- Colour Space=RAW16
- Gain=121
- Exposure=11.76745 seconds
- Brightness=4 (no dark subtraction)
- Temperature=-4.9C

Horsehead & Flame:
- Stack of 13 frames
- Binning=1
- Capture Area=4144x2822
- Colour Space=RAW16
- Gain=400
- Exposure=30 seconds
- Brightness=50 (applied to adjust for subtracted dark frame)
- Temperature=-4.9C

Rosette:
- Stack of 23 frames
- Binning=1
- Capture Area=4144x2822
- Colour Space=RAW16
- Gain=421
- Exposure=30 seconds
- Brightness=60 (applied to adjust for subtracted dark frame)
- Temperature=-5.3C

Nice captures I did the Rosette last weekend as I had never done it before, I have tried the flame and horsehead but have an issue with Alnitak as it causes my ASI1600 to micro lense and flair on the longer exposures especially with the Oiii narrowband filter going to have to experiment if we ever get any clear skies.

Also want ago at M42/M43 as you have done as it quite high now. So many target so few clear nights :(

Keep posting the images

Clear skies (Optimistically)

Cheers

Thanks Nick.
All those targets and crummy winter weather! We had sort of a false Spring here this week and a few really nice days. Now winter is back with a vengeance.

I checked out your Rosette nebula photo... great detail in there giving it a lot of depth - nice!
