Warning about renaming target

#1

Post by roelb »

I'm still struggling with the warning about a renamed object name while Live Stacking is active.

When I answer no and try to save the current stack with the new target name, another warning appears.

So, I'm not able to save the same stack with a new name, while I don't want to overwrite the first one.
I'm using the Folder Monitor Camera doing some test with different Enhancement settings, to have them documented.

Hi,

not sure if there is some confusion here...

You see the name change message if you change the target name while live stacking *and* the current live stack has already saved some files of one sort or another.

* If you answer 'Yes' then SharpCap tries to rename all the existing saved files from the current stack to use the new target name, and then uses the new target name for any further saved files. In theory you could get a warning if some of the files cannot be renamed, but the second screenshot doesn't match this warning.

* If you answer 'No' then the renaming doesn't happen, and SharpCap will continue to use the old (before change) target name for the rest of that stack.

On the other hand, the file overwrite warning comes up at any point when the calculations of a new file name to save something to come up with a file name that already exists. This usually indicates something not quite right with your file name settings which then allows the duplicates to be created.

As an example, if one of your live stack file name settings contains something like

{TargetName}\{Date}\blahblahblahblah

It looks like you are dividing the captures into folders based on target name, then date, then files within that folder. But, because there is no {Time} in the template, if you run two stacks of the same target on the same date then you are liable to get file overwrite issues - even if you don't you will get files from the two stacks in the same folder. The thing to do is to change the template to

{TargetName}\{Date}\Stack at {Time}\blahblahblah

Now every time you start a new stack on the same day it will get its own folder - no more problems hopefully.

cheers,

Thanks replying Robin.

I don't divide the captures into folders based on target name, then date, then files within that folder.
But the saved file contains: object name, camera, exp time, date, time.
But now it is clear to me what happens depending on the answer No/Yes.
So, when I want to do tests and documentt different Live Stacking settings, I must clear the stacking cycle with a new object name.
Doing so I have different jpg/fis files for further investigating/comparing and eventually publishing on Cloudy Nights.
Thanks clarifying this topic.

I am not using autostacker but simply trying to use the start capture sequence and then the deep sky options. Whenever I do that I get the previous folder name and the same name on each file. I set the target name to my new object in the main window, I set the same name or at least check that its the same in the drop down title set my sequence and press run...it reverts to the exact same name what ever I try to do. How can I remove that name and get it to run my expected new name...if i remove the option in sequence planner then i get no name but thats not what i expect. I think in earlier versions the sequence from capture dropdown options allowed me to change the title there. Why doesn't it change now.

I have discovered that I can change the name if i go to the special editing box at bottom right but that shouldnt be necessary. Surely. Can it be simplified so that entering the name in the main window remains effective for all deep sky sequences.

Hi,

the normal change of name is effective for deep sky stacking, but the problem arises if you start the sequence when the box contains 'M31' and then change it to 'M42'. If the stack hasn't saved any files yet it is fine, the change can just happen with no problem.

However, if there are already saved files that contain 'M31' in the file name or the folder name then it is more complex - just changing the name from that point forward might leave half the files from the stack in one folder and half in another, which nobody wants. Instead, will offer to rename existing files in the stack to match the newly changed name, which keeps things consistent (either all renamed if you answer yes or all left alone if you answer no).

cheers,

Robin, I couldn’t find how to set up a new post so I piggy backed on this one. Thanks for the response…I am not trying to use your stacking option as discussed mainly in this post, I am just trying to run a sequence of darks using the main menu “Capture” menu dropdown, I then use “start capture” option, then “deep sky option” at bottom of that window. That is the part that doesn’t seem to work. However In my current version if I simply follow that process and enter my desired new object name in the object box the saved files are always named a previous name…”andromeda”, regardless of what I put in the object name box in this drop down. And regardless of what I put in the main Target name box. If however I use normal simple settings and say 20 frames then that records the images with my selected target name As expected. The only way I can get to change the name for a sequence is if I go to Main menu and choose “Sequence” and follow that path then I can rename the file set but that seems an unnecessarily awkward process. I am sure that in the past I have used the deep sky capture drop down successfully but this is not happening now. Any ideas would be welcome. I can send log if that helps.
