Stellarmate can livestack in it's app... You can also install a client version on windows and watch folders too. Pixinsight has an OK livestack script (it just does a stretch and stacks, it's pretty good and it's linux compatible). File download over WIFI can add some lag, but it works OK too.

sorry, the answer here is never It would require a rewrite of all the UI and all the camera communication code, so it's not going to happen!

Yes, I LOVE SharpCap, but I have started to hate Windows11 even more. I am committed to ending my relationship with Microsoft. I don't like the attempts to force a MS Account and use OneDrive. The last straw is that my browser automatically pops up a full page screen selling my Surface Pro. I thought I bought an OS not a full page ad. Also, I am tired of the constant hardware updates just because of Windows. Yeah, I know, there are always work-arounds but who knows what Win12 will bring?

The new distributions of Linux give my wife and kids that Windows look and provide all the tools they already use anyway so its a no brainer.

Sorry SharpCap, it was fun while it lasted and I hate to see you go.

sorry to see you go - I must say that I do find the Microsoft approach to 'log in with accounts, subscribe, etc' annoying and I have created a list of things to do when installing Windows 11 to disable as much of that sort of rubbish as possible.

This will be the big turning point for SharpCap, with the advent of Win11 being pushed hard, and a plevy of virus possibilities where software won't be written for Win10 any longer. I just installed Linux Mint on a test laptop with "flying colors" and testing other astronomy apps with success. I'm sorry to say SharpCap will lose in the end; IF they don't change, because other astronomy apps are working just fine in Linux. SharpCap will slowly fall; not being able to reap yearly fees. I will look for alternatives (and there are), because Windows is a dying horse for those of us with more technical abilities, which include most amateur astronomers!

I've been using Linux for one thing and another (mostly servers, but some desktop stuff) since 1995 or so - some 2.x version of Slackware and Kernel 1.1.59. In all that time, it's always been 'maybe next year will be the year of Linux on the desktop'. Admitedly Microsoft seem to be doing their best to alienate users who just want to use a PC, but right now the number of people switching to a Linux desktop is still pretty small. Far more people are just switching to Windows 11 - I'd estimate about 65% of current users on recent versions are on Win11, about 35% on Win10 and just a handful still on 7 or 8.

We will see what does happen in the future, but there would have to be a pretty significant shift before the best choice for us out of all the things we could improve in SharpCap would be a Linux version, sorry.

+1 from me for a Linux version as well.

I'm a lifetime license holder of SharpCap, but I made the switch from Windows 10 to EndeavourOS (Arch Linux) in Nov 2024, and have been away from astro imaging during that time. Just now getting around to rebuilding my capture pipeline under Linux, looking into tools that are available.

I have been using Linux/*BSD in some form or another since 2002. These days, I am most familiar with Arch Linux, but have used RedHat/Fedora, Debian/Ubuntu extensively in the past. Using FreeBSD in network appliances. I'm also a Mac user as well. But my main workstations had always run Windows, up until I decided enough was enough and made the jump to EndeavourOS with KDE Plasma. I've since moved all of my machines away from Windows. I even revived my trusty old 2011 MacBook Pro with an install of EndeavourOS.

My chosen profession is game development, specializing in C# programming with the Unity engine. I've been working as an IT Administrator and Information Security Officer for the past year, but am stepping back from that now, though. Which brings me back to astro imaging.

If you're looking for a C# developer, someone with experience as a software test engineer, and willing to maintain packages under Linux, I may be able to help.

Hi Nikko,

thanks for the interest and the offer. Sadly I think that the amount of work is just too large as the UI is implemented in Windows only WPF (and the relative user base too small to justify it).

There is one commercial solution that might be a 'drop in' fix (Avalonia XPF), but the pricing isn't realistic for the sort of SharpCap Pro sales I would be expecting to add by supporting a Linux or even Linux and Mac versions.

SharpCap may run, but driver support is the issue. A better solution may be to run Win7 as a virtual machine using QEMU.
