Atik 314L+ frame rate?

Hello,
I've been using Sharpcap off and on for quite a few years with many different cameras.
I've recently acquired an Atik 314L+ Colour Camera as my first foray into cooled cameras for all sorts of subjects.
It's connected fine to Sharpcap, but no matter what I try, I can't get a particularly fast frame rate. It's running about 0.9fps with a peak of 4.2fps. With an Altair camera, I'm regularly getting 30 - 50fps and more when trying to image Saturn, for example.
I've tried decreasing the exposure time to the minimum, putting the frame rate up to maximum, decreasing the ROI to the smallest pre-set - all the usual things - but nothing seems to change it.
Am I missing something?

Hi,

that's about typical for that camera (in fact, coincidentally, I have that very model, so just tested and got to about 4.3fps at minimum ROI and short exposure). You can get a bit more by selecting 'Preview Mode' on the controls on the right, but I think that affects image quality and is really for framing the target not capturing.

The difference is that the Atik camera is a CCD camera, which processes the readout of the data from the sensor pixel-by-pixel, whereas the CMOS cameras that we are more used to these days can process the analog-to-digital conversion of the stored charge into a digital value in all pixels concurrently (each pixel has its own A-to-D converter for CMOS).

With CCD, I think there is a tradeoff between readout speed and image quality, with a dash of cost thrown in - try to read out too quickly and the image quality will suffer unless you start using very high spec, expensive, circuitry for the readout side. Of course, for the intended targets for this camera (DSOs), the slower readout speed isn't really a problem.
