Goto Object Question

#1

Post by martinclayden »

I am attempting to use the Goto function - to image the Moon.

I'm using an HEQ5 Pro mount, Skywatcher 130PDS and ASI 533 MC Pro setup.

The mount is polar aligned. On selecting the Moon from the list the mount slews to the approximate position of the Moon, but not the exact position. Plate solve refinement of the position would not work (I believe), the same issue would apply for the Sun.

How may the positioning accuracy be improved in these circumstances ?

Thanks

Hi Martin,

so, firstly let's cover plate solving - this should work providing that you have a good number of stars visible in the image (so obviously not during daytime and sometimes not near to the moon where the glow around the moon can cause problems). To get the required number of stars (30+ visible), set 2s exposures and mid-high gain before trying to plate solve. With your equipment, you have a field of view of about 1x1 degree, so that should be fine to plate solve.

If you can't get plate solving to work, other ways to find the moon include

* A finder scope (possible a guide scope with guide camera - could have a wider field of view)
* Looking along the telescope - often along the heads of the tube ring bolts or similar to see where it is pointing relative to the moon and then manual adjustment
* Setting a high enough gain/exposure to see the glow that surrounds the moon in the camera view and then moving the mount in the direction which makes the glow brighter (watch the histogram as you move the mount).

Hope this helps,

Robin
