SV205 no gain control visible

#1

Post by DebinOz »

My Sv205 is found in the camera menu of sharpcap but in the imaging control panel there is no slider for gain. What is going wrong? I only see a black screen in the preview.

Hi,

for that particular camera (and for other cameras that are effectively connected as Webcams), you need to look in the image controls section to find the gain slider. You'll find the gain there for the SV205, although that isn't always the case - some webcams make very few controls user adjustable, and SharpCap will show less controls in those cases.

cheers,

For that camera you also need to make sure you apply the firmware update, I couldn't see it in v4l2-ctl until I'd applied the update (which unfortunately only works from a Windows computer).

Here's the firmware: https://www.svbony.com/blog/update-on-s ... -firmware/

I'd be very interested in getting hold of a pre-made gain/noise chart for this camera if you happen to find or make one, please let me know how you get on.

Hi,

thanks for sharing the link to the firmware update page. Sadly SharpCap cannot perform an analysis of a webcam sensor because the exposure can only be changed by factors of 2, not adjusted smoothly.

The only data I can find for the IMX415 is for the Astroasis model with the same sensor - you can see it here : https://www.astroasis.com/en/planetarycamera/64.html

What I don't know for sure is if the gain for the SVBony 205 works the same way as the Astroasis gain- theirs is in 0.1dB, so a gain increase of 200 makes the image 10x brighter. I don't have an SV205 handy to check how the gain works for that camera. Also make sure you have the IMX415 version of the SV205, not the older IMX179 version!

cheers,

Robin
