Camera Suggestion

#1

Post by Silvinho »

Looking to take some photos of stars. I have a celestron nexstar 130stl and was given an svbony sv105 camera, but i find it only really picks up the brightest of stars. Any suggestions for a better camera - budget is up to about £400 - or even any suggestions for settings to pick up more stars with my current camera. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

The SV105 is nice and cheap, but it only connects to the PC as a webcam, so there is less control over the camera that for true astronomy cameras. In the case of that camera the real issue is the maximum exposure of 1s, which limits it for any sort of deep sky (stars/nebulae/galaxies). If you have already set maximum exposure and gain then you have gone as far as you can I think.

Given your budget of about £400, I would suggest looking at cameras based on the Sony IMX585 sensor - there are models from Altair, ZWO, SVBony, etc in the £300 to £400 price bracket that would be a big step up from the SV105. If you can stretch a little further then I see that Altair are currently selling the cooled version of their 585 for £499 which seems like a good price for a cooled camera (AA585CTEC)

cheers,

Robin
