Problems with Pegasus Focuscube3

#1

Post by Tony Vale »

Hi Robin,
My operating system is Windows 10. I have just downloaded the lastest available versions of SharpCap, Pegasus Unity and ASCOM. The attachment shows firstly, the Unity software screenshot, then the Sharpcap screenshot. This suggests to me that Sharpcap can see the focuser and is communicating with it.
If I then press the Setup button I get the error messages which are shown next. After that I have attached the log.
I have successfully set offsets for the filter wheel which seems to work ok but I would like to use the SharpCap focussing tool to set the initial focus. Can you help ? Hopefully I have provided enough information but please let me know if not.

Kind Regards,
Tony

Hi Tony,

I can see two problems in the log...

Firstly at about 23:53 you tried to connect tot he focus cube and received error messages like 'Failed to create the driver, The unique ID {blahblahblah} doesn't correspond to a driver. Driver not found'. That sort of error is usually an indication that something isn't installed properly.

Then about five minutes later you try to connect again and it works without that error. I'm going to guess that in that five minutes you reinstalled or installed something while SharpCap was still running, otherwise I would have expected the second connection attempt to fail in the same way as the first. There *might* be problems because SharpCap was running during that reinstall/install and could end up using old code from an older version when a newer one has now been installed. If you haven't already, it's worth testing again after shutting down the PC and rebooting, just in case.

Secondly, after you manage to connect at 23:58:06, everything seems fine to begin with - you can see the focuser position showing in SharpCap and there are no errors recorded in the log for about 40 seconds until you hit the 'Setup' button - then it all goes horribly wrong.

I have a focus cube, so I will test that same scenario later to see if I see the same problem, but it's worth knowing that there is no point in pressing the 'Setup' button for a pegasus focuser once you have connected to it in SharpCap... It doesn't actually show you anything useful, since all the configuration is in Pegasus Unity anyway. The only real use for the Setup button with the Pegasus hardware is to use it when you are *not* connected to let you choose which device to connect to (if you have more than one of the same type, or if the Pegasus software has somehow forgotten which one to use).

I guess that based on the fact that the Setup button is redundant, it would be worth giving it another go and seeing if you can properly control/move the focuser as long as you stay clear of the setup button.

cheers,

Robin

Hi Robin,
Thanks for your reply.
If I remember rightly. when the connection succeeded at 23:58:06 I had just started the Unity Driver. I assume this means I must always start the Unity Driver even if I am operating the focuser through SharpCap. I wasn't sure if it would just work in the background like ASCOM.
There seems to be another problem with the way I connect up the focuser. I had been connecting it to the back of my camera (ZWOASI183MM Pro) as I thought this was just a standard USB hub but it seems to work better if I connect it directly to the computer. Connected this way, and with Unity running, I do seem to be able to control the focuser through SharpCap.

Many thanks for your help !

Regards,
Tony

Hi Tony,

glad you've got it sorted :)

I would have thought that the back of the camera USB port would have been OK, but maybe if the camera is also very active (fast frame rate, etc), that might make it hard to get data to/from the focuser as the camera is using all the bandwidth?

cheers,

Robin
