Question regarding contrast (edge) detection focus tool

#1

Post by Moonstruck »

I tried to use the contrast (edge) detection focus tool last night while imaging Jupiter, but couldn't get it to work. The tool opened up successfully, but it had no data or graphic with a focus score. There was only a blue line running across the middle of the box. I changed the focus manually but no focus score or data appeared.

Can you let me know if there is a setting I need to change, or something else I need to do to get it to work manually? Or is this only to be used in conjunction with automatic/electronic focusing?

Hi,

I think the problem is that the selection box (which is used to select which part of the image the measurement comes from) is really tiny and at the top-left corner of the image. You can just see it in the screenshot under the 'Live View' button.

SharpCap is trying to measure the contrast in that box, but since the whole of the box is dark, it discards the measurement as invalid and you get no measurements appearing in the graph.

Resize/reposition that box on top of the planet and all should be fine. You can double click on the image to begin the resize/reposition process - the double click moves the box so that it is centered where you double click and the size becomes about half the size of the visible part of the image.

cheers,

Robin

Thanks very much - I'll give that a try.
