Hi,

apart from trial-and-error (or trying another PC), it's tricky - I suppose we could try to capture a list of the DLLs loaded into the SharpCap.exe process and see if there is anything in the list that looks unusual (ie not normal Microsoft/Windows stuff, not stuff that SharpCap itself wants).

We could try using procdump (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysin ... s/procdump) to make a crash dump of the process when it hits the error (or when it exits) - you could then send me the crash dump and I can see if I can spot anything unusual loaded up in the DLL list.

Download procdump from the page linked above, unpack it and then run the following from a command prompt window:

Code: Select all

"c:\path\to\procdump.exe" -e -t -w sharpcap
Procdump will then wait for SharpCap to start running, and capture a crash dump when it exits. It will print out the location of the dmp file - send that crash dump file to me (probably via google drive, etc - it will be too big to upload here) and I will take a look.

thanks,

Robin

Hi,

thanks for the dump file - unfortunately it didn't reveal as much as I had hoped, but I did get some interesting info from it :

* A slightly different error code 0x80131506 and an 'ExecutionEngineException' - a search for the error code doesn't point to anything specific, and the execution engine exception indicatest hat the .NET runtime is failing internally, which we had guessed already

* There aren't any unexpected DLLs in memory - all the ones shown in the crash dump show up if I run SharpCap up to the point of failure on my machine. This means that I don't think there is any extra security software interfering with operation. Code relating to Microsoft's antivirus is in memory, so it's just possible that settings for Windows Defender are somehow set to 'extra strict' (if there is such a thing) and maybe that is causing problems.

I see that you have already tried the 32 and 64 bit versions of SharpCap. Have you tried an older version of SharpCap 4.1? In particular, if you try SharpCap 4.1.12196, that uses the older version 7.0 of Microsoft's .NET runtime, maybe that is unaffected by whatever is causing .NET version 8 to die during startup.

cheers,

Robin

Hi!

No :( I just tried to deactivate Windows Defender and nothing. Also I uninstalled SharpCap and installed 4.1.12196 and I have the same, it is not starting. In my laptop is working fine.

Hi,

ok, running low on ideas now, sorry :(

I guess you could try running SysInternals 'dbgview.exe' while starting SharpCap - it's just possible that whatever glitch is causing the failure also causes some debug logging from the .NET runtime that might show up and give a clue to what is going on. SharpCap's own code won't create any debugview logging that early in the run of the process, so if you do see anything pop up as you start the program it might be of interest.

You could also try the last version of SharpCap 4.0 (still available for download) and the first of 4.1 (right at the bottom of the downloads page). I suspect you will find that 4.0 works and even the earliest 4.1 doesn't, which won't help much (lots of changes between the two), but if by some chance the oldest 4.1 works, then we could go looking for the point at which things stopped working in the 4.1 range which might give new insight by showing which changes caused the problem to appear.

cheers,

Robin
