Can I stop saving FITS Files ?

#1

Post by OregonSky »

At this point in time I never do serious post processing of any of my images - But, when running 4.1 with Solve and Sync check marked, Each time I move to a new object it saves my requested PNG or JPG BUT also a set of Fits Files that I never use.
I have tried to find setting to eliminate saving them but cannot find one.

Its not a BIG deal to go thru and Delete Each set as I review my Captures later but would be nice to not have to if there's just a setting that I missed.

Thanks

PS Robin - Thank you for taking the time to update the manual to 4.1 - I'm sure that must have been WAY DOWN on your list of projects you were looking forward to. There are still a lot of things I dont understand but, every bit helps.

Hi Mike,

do you have the option to 'Auto save on clear/close' enabled in live stacking? Currently that saves the stack in all the possible different save formats on the grounds that if you have asked for an auto save, it would be bad to only save one format and then that turns out to be not the one you want.

I think I probably need to have some options to control this, as I found a bug report related to the very same thing the other day - SharpCap ran out of memory when switching from deep sky live stacking to planetary live stacking because the deep sky was still saving in 32 bit FITS (massive file - 750Mb) at the point when the planetary live stacking was trying to set up a similar amount of memory to get started.

cheers,

I do not have that option checked.
and to confirm - In the Camera Settings I have PNG chosen. FITS is not marked.
Thanks

Hi Mike,

that's odd then! What are the exact names of the FITS files that are being created? If you can give me the exact names and send me a SharpCap log then I can dig properly into where they are coming from and why.

cheers,

Hi Robin
Clouds Clouds Clouds - So I just did a quick align and Requested Fireworks Galaxy - followed by NGC 6745

For Fireworks it saved :
Stack_16Bits_14frames_56s.fits
Stack_32Bits_14frames_56s.fits
abd the camera setting txt files
plus a folder named "processed" with camera setting file and "Stack_14frames_56s.png "

I closed Sharpcap with NGC 6745 on screen - and it did not save fits files - only saved "Stack_6frames_24s_withdisplaystretch.png" and camera settings.

Hi,

I have a new update (hopefully ready later today) that allows you to specify which types of image are auto-saved when closing or auto-saving a stack, which I think will help in your situation, as you can turn off the save of the 32 bit FITS (and even the 16 if you want).

When the new update is out, have a look in the live stack settings area (right hand most tab in live stacking).

cheers,
