DSLR Camera Support

Post by stw.1955 »

When does SharpCap plan to actually support DSLR cameras? The ASCOM driver is pretty much useless, which I'm pretty sure you are aware of. As there are many astrophotographers using DSLR cameras, including me, a paid user, it seems that a an app that purports to be mainstream should be supporting DSLR cameras natively. It seems embarrassing that it doesn't.

Hi,

unfortunately the answer is that I have no intention at all of adding direct support for DSLR cameras to SharpCap in the future.

This decision is based on having seen the difficulties faced by the ASCOM.DSLR driver. I have come to the conclusion that direct DSLR support wouldn't be something that we could do successfully and maintain. Given the amount of work that would be required and the need to have multiple models of various brands of DSLR camera to test with, it would be a unlikely to be the best use of our time.

There are of course applications that have chosen to specialize in DSLR support, such as APT, which would be worth investigating. They will have already worked through many of the glitches and gremlins that seem to be associated with particular DSLR models to get a working system.

cheers,

Robin
