SharpCap support for dithering via Celestron SSAG

#1

Post by ChrisR Oz »

Hi Robin,

Are you planning to support dithering via CPWI for the Celestron StarSense Autoguider? Some applications, such as NINA appear to be going that way.

If so, it makes a very simple compact system possible (e.g. RASA8, SSAG, good cooled camera, enabling auto-alignment, guided imaging integrated with SC).

Cheers, Chris.

Hi Chris,

no plans at the moment - at a quick search I was unable to come up with any concrete information on how other applications might trigger dithering via CPWI, or any demonstration of someone using the device with NINA and dithering. Do you have any links to share that explain how it works or is activated in NINA which might help me understand what is going on?

cheers,

Robin

Hi Robin,

Still trying to get some details from Celestron. However, there are some posts on CloudyNights that show CPWI has its own “PHD2 server” that can be enabled. I wonder if that would appear the same to SharpCap as the real PHD2 to accept dither commands.

See for example: https://www.cloudynights.com/topic/9087 ... r-in-cpwi/

Cheers, Chris.

Hi Chris,

ah, that's interesting - if they have simulated the PHD2 server protocol (and done it accurately) then SharpCap will just talk to it, thinking it is talking to PHD2...

The devil will be in the detail - SharpCap looks fairly closely at the PHD2 status to track guiding and settling status and to know what commands to send to get guiding into action (or stop it) when necessary. If it follows the same sequences of status as PHD2 then all should be fine, but if it differs then things might go awry.

cheers,

Robin
