Sun-Moon edge scan

#1

Post by stbkaiser »

Hi Robin
Just ran across a really nice function built into the Rainbow RST135 mount hand controller.
They call it the "eclipse mode"
Thought this would be a great feature to add to sharpcap for upcoming solar eclipse for those who don't have the RST mount.
Would also work for scan general imaging of the sun or moon

Basically it sets up a Move mode similar to your button in the Scope control panel that allows you to move out in a spiral pattern.
But in the Eclipse mode , it sets up the mount to move in a circular pattern, in a automated move.
The circle parameters are adjustable :
Diameter of the circle
speed of the motion
direction of the mount move rotation
continuous scan/rotation
rotation angle- or number of rotations

Setup is straight forward
simply set the sun or moon so it is centered in the FOV
when you start the MODE it automatically moves your object so the edge is in the center of FOV
Then you start the move and adjust the diameter of the move and the speed.
You can run for continuous scan rotation or for fixed number of degrees / rotations
Let me know if you have any questions.

Take care
Steve

Hi Steve,

sounds interesting - in a way a bit like the solar mosaic tool, but with a continuous movement around the edge of the sun. It would need to work with an accurate mount (with no significant backlash) to allow it to work nicely in real time.

Thanks for the suggestion - I will make a note of it and consider it for a futre version.

Your right
I'm getting spoiled with the harmonic drive system.
It would probable be less precise with standard drive systems.
But might still be acceptable.
Fun to watch what is going on with the sun at closeup resolution as you rotate around.

I had interesting experience testing this feature.
I had it set to circle the sun in 2 minutes, doing avi capture with smaller ROI.
Then I played back the file.
What. It was moving around the sun at snails pace.
Ohh
I was capturing at (around 150 fps) .
Tends to make thing play back in slow mo .Ha
Anyway Thanks for all the great features you have produced.
Seems I'm still learning things every time I use your software
Take care
Steve
