ConeSharp - aligning stars during measurement

#1

Post by GSchreider »

Hi

a few days ago I did use ConeSharp to measure my cone error for my new Avalon Linear mount and the mounted Mead 8" SC.
The result was very positive
Image
Almost too good to believe or is it not?
I was wondering if I did the alignment step as it should be.
In step 4 and step 6 I did the alignment of the stars with platesolving and with the new SharpCap click to recenter function.
Is this as it is supposed to be done ?

Thanks for clarifying.

Any other comments on the result as shown ?

Cheers
Gernot

Hi,

I think the plate solving /resync is causing the problem.

ConeSharp looks at the co-ordinates of the mount before the alignment (it remembers those) and after the alignment - the difference between the two is the key thing - that goes into the next staged of the calculation. If you move the mount manually then the difference shows how far out the GOTO movement was. If you do a plate solve/resync then the co-ordinates before/after are the same, so zero movement measured, so you get a 'perfect' result.

If you set the option of what to do after solve/sync to 'Offset the mount position to center the target' instead of 'Sync mount and recenter target' in the plate solving settings then I think you will get correct results (although I haven't tried... ConeSharp was written long before those options existed in SharpCap!)

cheers,

Robin
