Clavius - best 1% of 20,000 frames

Post by turfpit »

Captured May 2022, ~75% waxing moon. Captured at 21:45 with moon approaching the meridian. Hampered by high, thin cloud - see the Autostakkert quality graph.

Celestron AVX Mount, Celestron C8 SCT, UV/IR cut filter, QHY5LII-M camera, JMI motorised focuser.
20,000 frames @ 46fps, 800x600, MONO8, SER, exposure=2.5ms, gain=10.
Sharpcap 4, Autostakkert!3, Registax 6, Faststone Image Viewer.

This capture took a big hit with high, thin cloud - see the Quality graph. By limiting to 1% of the 20,000 frames (~200 frames), the quality was 70% or better (no point stacking bad frames). At 2% of frames, the quality had dropped to around 60%. Stacked with drizzle 1.5.

Registax for wavelets, brightness, contrast, gamma. I processed the AS!3 _conf file which is sharpened and applied conservative wavelet settings.

Faststone Image Viewer was used to crop and flip the image.

That's a killer shot Dave. Nice balance in the dark and bright areas too.
My next moon session will also be in the 20000 frames range with the best 1%. I used to do 10000 frames and 1% but with the new barlow indeed a larger range of frames works way better.

Thanks Menno. I think I was lucky with the illumination at the time of capture - showing features on crater floors and on crater walls.

Indeed a Barlow is a severe test of optics and seeing. Having 20,000 frames to play with gives a better chance of acquiring a decent stack.

Thanks Tim.

The illumination (75%) was about right to display the features of this region. There are also good features to help with focusing when zoomed into 100 - 125%. UV/IR cut, IR685 and Wratten #25 (red) filters all seem to give decent results for this region of the moon.
