Jupiter & Saturn, ZWO ASI120MC

#1

Post by turfpit »

Captured June 24, 2020 around 01:30. Planets at 15°elevation, seeing=shocking (2x Barlow a waste of time). A session to test out my WinJupos workflow (to compensate for Jupiter 10 hour rotation). Sets of 10 videos captured between 00:45 and 01:45, last set nearest meridian used as planets brightest then.

Equipment: Celestron AVX mount, Celestron C8 SCT, IR cut filter, ZWO ASI120MC (USB2)

Capture:
  • Enable WinJupos filenames in SharpCap settings
  • Set Brightness=0
  • Set gain=70 (out of 100)
  • Adjust exposure (0.007s) until histogram ~70% saturation
  • Capture a sequence of 10 x45s SER videos @ 100fps (gives 5000 frames per video)

Process:
  • Autostakkert!3, stack 10 videos, each best 25% of 5000 frames
  • Registax6, auto RGB balance, mild sharpening
  • WinJupos, align 10 images and combine to single image
  • Registax, sharpen + contrast + brightness

I will keep practising https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap200628.html, thanks for that link Brian :)

[EDIT]
The left hand image is a single video processed with Autostakkert!3 and Registax 6.
The right hand image is the result of combining 10 processed videos with WinJupos.

Thanks Bruce. Because of Jupiter's fast rotation (I think it is around 0.6° per minute), long videos do not help as the result would be a smearing of the detail. WinJupos allows for several shorter videos to be combined with the software compensating for the fast rotation. The realistic limit seems to be around 15 minutes elapsed time for a video set for Jupiter with Saturn slightly longer. Hence the need for high fps captures.

At least I understand now why my 2017 Jupiter videos (at much higher elevation) never had any detail.

I have edited the first post to show a comparison between a single processed video and 10 processed videos combined with WinJupos.
