Orion Starshoot Autoguiding Camera

I've found that this camera does work with sharpcap. Is it feasible to use this camera for polar alignment and then replace it with a DSLR for imaging?

What telescope do you intend to use the Starshoot on? Anything with a focal length of more than about 400mm will lead to a field of view that is too small.

An Orion 8" Astrograph. It has a focal length of 800mm.

I don't have a guiding scope yet. That will work though, right?

Hi,

the 800mm focal length will be too long with the small sensor on the starshoot - 100mm to 300mm is ideal for that sensor size, 400mm will probably work.

You might be able to put a cheap 0.5x focal reducer on the camera. The distortion on the edge would be bad, but it may be enough to get it working.

I ordered a 50mm guide scope. With the Orion SSAG, will the polar alignment routine work with this? If so I'll go ahead and pay for a year subscription to sharpcap. And hopefully soon Canon DSLRs will be supported. :)

Hi,

yes, the combination of a that size sensor (1280x960 @ 3.75 micron) and a 50mm diameter 200mm focal length guide scope works well for polar alignment. If you have any problems check out

and

I have been using the SSAG with an ST80 and getting great Polar Alignment results.
