Settings for QHY5L-II-C and DSS

#1

Post by Ton »

I like to give deepsky a go with SharpCap and a QHY5L-II-C
To preserve laptop battery power, I want to stack images later with DeepSkyStacker.

I am not sure about the following settings:
File format - I think that FITS is best for my application?
Color Space - RGB24 imported in DSS shows in correct colors.
When using the RAW8 or RAW16 formats I get a monochrome picture in DSS. I can not select my camera in DSS, but I can select Generic coding, of which Generic GRBG seems to show correct colors.

Any advice?

Regards,
Ton

You are right - if you save as RAW fits files then you need to go to the 'Raw/FITS DDP Settings' in DSS and select the correct bayer pattern (in your case Generic GRBG).

There are two advantages to working this way

1) Saved files are 3* smaller than RGB24
2) DSS can be set to use a more advanced debayer algorithm than the bilinear algorithm that is (very probably) used by RGB24.

Of course the improved debayer algorithm will only provide quite a small improvement in the final image quality, and only if you have got everything else (focus, exposure, etc) correct. Still, it's probably worth working that way as it doesn't take much extra effort.

cheers,

Robin, thank you for your confirmation and advice.
Can't wait for a clear sky to give it a try.

Best regards,
