Target Magnitude and Smart Histogram

#1

Post by Topographic »

Trying to get my head around the Smart Histogram (again). If I point at a dark area of sky, use the recommended settings and photograph M42, the results compared to photgraphing M1 would be different due to the magnitude difference of the target. Is it the case that the image then depends on the number of subs taken to get the same level of detail, and noise.

Thanks

Total time of all the subs is what will kill the noise. Length of subs can make it more efficient.

M42 would be brighter but it doesn't matter that much because you will stretch the histogram to your liking. Some targets like M42 will over expose the core very quickly and be too bright....in my experience this is the only time I worry exposure length other than what the brain recommends.
