WHAT IS THE OPTIMUM GAIN SETTING ON THE ASI-224 FOR PLANETARY IMAGING. ACCORDING TO DAMIAN PEACH THE BEST GAIN SETTING FOR THE ASI-120 IS 60-70 AND IMAGE SATURATION AT ABOUT 75%

Hi,

A value of above 60 is good for this camera because it takes advantage of the camera switching in to what is called a 'high conversion gain' mode which reduces the read noise. Other than that, I would suggest starting with your exposure at the right value (less than 1/30s or so) and then turn up the gain until the brightness of the planet gets to about 75% on the histogram – how far you have to go to do that will depend on your planet – much further for Saturn and for Mars or Jupiter for instance.

Hope this helps, Robin
