Re: Can't Install updates after version 3.0.3994

Hi Dan,

I did a quick test

* Brand new Win10 Pro (non-N) x64 virtual machine (VMware) installed from the build 1709 iso
* Run all updates once windows installs
* Install VMware tools
* Install SharpCap 3.1.5092

this works fine for me with no error.

Here's a log of my install

You can see that the first difference is that I get no problem about the state.rsm file near the top - after install I find that the folder 'C:\Users\robin\AppData\Local\Package Cache\{e38ac4e7-f8ca-423b-bd27-f35e39c8455d}' does exist and has a state.rsm file in and a SharpCapInstall.exe file too.

not sure how much this will help though.

Do you have another PC that SharpCap does install on? You can just copy the installed directory across...

cheers,

Robin

Hmm,

these links suggest antivirus issues causing the failure to read/write to filesystem and registry during install

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... 44f995a014
http://kb.tableau.com/articles/issue/er ... -upgrading

I am testing with Windows Defender and am having no issues - are you using a different AV program?

cheers,

Robin

Hi -

Thanks - I saw those links too. AV is not the issue for me at least. The SharpCap install failure happens on a 1709 16299.309 clean machine that:

1. Never had SharpCap or ASCOM installed
2. ASCOM 6.3 is installed before SharpCap

As you know, there are many confusing variables here so YMMV - but I don't think so. I did four clean installs to arrive at the method below (and a lot of web searching, DSIM's RegEdits, etc. )

I was finally able to install everything: clean Windows install, updates, ASCOM 6.3 and SharpCap. It took a bit of doing, but it now works.

In order to get Windows Updates to complete from the 16299.125 machine, get ASCOM 6.3 and SharpCap 3.1 up and running from a clean Windows 10 install, I proceeded as follows:

1. Run Windows Media Creation tool - install on USB drive
2. Installed Windows 10 Home 1709 16299.125 from USB
3. Install SharpCap 3.1.5092.0 - ***before windows updates itself*** (the March Cumulative Update I think is the problem)
4. Run Windows Update. This updated 16299.125 to 16299.309 which again, I think is the source of the problems I was having
5. From Control Panel, upgrade Windows Home to Pro (previously purchased - i don't think this is relevant)
6. From Control Panel, run "Turn Windows features on or off" and set the checkbox for .Net 3.5 Framework. Installs successfully.
7. Install ASCOM 6.3 only after steps 4, 5 and 6; not before step 4 finishes (it will try to update to 16299.309 and then that update will fail if ASCOM is installed before it completes).
8. Run ASCOM Diagnostics - Pass.
9. Install all other tools and drivers and then back everything up
10. Wait for clouds to pass and capture some data!

Thank you for taking the time to help with this - it is truly appreciated!

- Dan

Hi Dan,

good to hear that you got there in the end - I just checked my test virtual machine and it is 1709 16299.309 and I can install/uninstall SharpCap 3.1 as much as I like on it. Something weird definitely going on!

cheers,

Robin

Hi -

Well, the saga continues... I tried to update my successful install of 3.1.5092 to 3.1.5098 and got the same errors relating to the package cache and permissions that I had previously.

This is basically just an FYI - please don't spend any time on this; Although I do not have installation problems (so far) with other code, it is not a deal-breaker for me; I'll happily use 3.1.5092 for now (this is just a computer program for G-d's sake!)

I also wanted to say "Thank you" again - I know how much time it takes to setup VMs, get software installed, check logs and sift through all the things I sent.

I'll set up a VirtualBox VM and try a few more things when time permits. Interestingly a fresh copy (no previous sharpcap versions but ASCOM 6.3 and SGP are all installed and working) of 3.1.5098 fails installation on my up-to-date desktop as well - same OS versions but this machine has been running and updated for a very long time.

Best -
- Dan

P.S. You had mentioned you are using VMware. VirtualBox (free) works but has network performance issues; it also is very sensitive to configuration file changes. Do you think it's worth spending $250 on VMware Workstation Pro 14?

You have Win 10 Pro. If your CPU supports SLAT then you could run Hyper-V and the price is right.

Hi,

VMWare is definitely the smoothest and most performant virtualization option (beats VirtualBox and HyperV hands down), but I wouldn't think it was worth that price as a home user only.

Have a look at the free 'VMWare Player' option - I think it's still free anyway. It probably has enough funcitonality for most home uses.

The install issues you are having are very puzzling - do let me know if you ever find out the cause! I'm hoping this is just some strange isolated issue - it would be a concern if this is happening widely.

cheers,

Robin

Robin/Dan

Having looked around the internet errors of the form:

[12F0:3178][2018-03-18T12:53:12]w055: Could not load or read state file: C:\Users\djsta\AppData\Local\Package Cache\{e38ac4e7-f8ca-423b-bd27-f35e39c8455d}\\state.rsm, error: 0x80070002

are not uncommon and seen across a variety of products. The error has been around for all of this decade at least. The common fixes seem to be turn off AV or create the folder manually. Sometimes the .msi doesn't expand fully into the Package Cache folder. Some products will not install if Windows Firewall is not running. Interestingly, disabling AV (which is commonly running its own firewall) lets the Window Firewall start and the product magically installs successfully. I have wrestled with this more than once - sadly.

Dan - with the clean builds at what stage, if any, do you install antivirus software? If you do have AV, what is it?

error: 0x80070002 is also related to Windows Update problems for which a Windows update troubleshooter is available from MS$.

Having the same error number for different issues keeps life interesting I suppose.
