Problems plate solving

#1

Post by cuivenion »

Hi, I was trying to solve with the latest Sharpcap 3.1. I keep getting a "catalogue not empty" error. I've installed All Sky Plate Solver and I'm pretty sure the indexes are correct. I've installed indices for my main scope/camera as well.

Can you post the SharpCap log? It should include all the output of the plate solving program which might have some more clues in it.

thanks,

Hi, Theres three logs here, as I can't remember which was the pertinant one. As I'd restarted Sharpcap a couple of times to see if it made a difference. Are these the right logs? I wasn't sure where to find them.

Ah, no, these are the log files of a little utility program that SharpCap uses to detect cameras - the real log files will not have the 'CameraFinder' in the name.

cheers,

Whoops, where do I find the right logs. Are they only available at the time while sharpcap is running?

They should be here

Code: Select all

C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Local\SharpCap\logs
Where did you find those logs?

Hi,

the first log contains info about a couple of attempts at plate solving, but no errors related to it. I need to check the logging to see if maybe progress gets logged but failure messages do not. Blind solving from a small sensor camera can be hit and miss because of the small area of sky that is viewed. A good check is to take a captured frame and upload it to the online solver at nova.astrometry.net - if that works then there is something not quite right with your local install. If the online version fails then it's unlikely that you will get the local version working!

cheers,

Robin
