ZWO ASI071 pro support

#1

Post by Ray Hansen »

I loaded the ASI071 pro natively. SC began previewing short exposures. I changed the exposure, the preview stopped, and
capture dropped succeeding frames. Does the 3.1 beta support this camera with either the native or ASCOM driver?

Hi Ray,

it should work - I have a non-pro 071 that works fine and I have had reports of the pro version working too.

I would suggest running through all the steps in the USB troubleshooting guide (viewtopic.php?f=18&t=349&p=1556#p1556), as frames stopping when you change parameters is often a symptom of USB problems.

cheers,

Robin

Hi Robin,
I had used an original 071 purchased last July. It transferred files OK, it just took lousy images. I upgraded to the 071 pro and can't get it
to transfer images to the PC. I went through all of the steps in the USB troubleshooter but nothing works. As soon as I change exposure to
4s or so, previewing stops and all images are dropped. I've attached another log file. Is there anything else I can look at or provide that would
point me to a probable cause? If I understand you correctly, you are aware of one or more 071 pro users that are getting images transferred no
problem. I can't get this working on this W10 laptop, another W10 desktop, or a W7 desktop. It isn't working with SharpCap, or MDL, AstroArt,
or Prism. My EOS transfers CR2 images no problem. This all sounds to me like a driver issue, but there aren't any driver updates and I can't get a response yet from ZWO.

One thing I noticed from your first log file is that SharpCap starts a rescan for cameras about 10 seconds after you stopped capturing.

This is interesting because there are only two reasons for this to happen:

1) You pressed the 'Rescan for cameras' menu item or
2) Windows sent SharpCap a notification that the hardware connected to the computer had changed

Immediately after the rescan the log starts showing errors related to talking to the ZWO camera.

I suspect the cause here was option 2 - Maybe the camera is having problems when you set longer exposures that is causing it to disconnect and reconnect to the computer (maybe it resets)?

If the camera is failing with other software too then you are almost certainly correct that the problem is somewhere in the ZWO software - either the camera firmware, the driver or the SDK. If you can pin down the exact limits of the issue (ie it starts at 3.8s exposure or 4.1s or 4.12s) then it may help ZWO track down the cause of the problem (it's weird how often the strangest detail points you in the right place to find a bug).

thanks,

Robin

The ZWO engineer did a remote diagnosis tonight and the problem is in the camera. Has to go back to China for repair.

Sorry to hear that you will be without it, but at least it is going to get fixed - let's hope they do a quick turnaround for you.

cheers,

Robin
