Okay, some clear skies and did check. See screenshots below.
Settings for platesolve captures: exposure 4 sec, Gain 600 (max).
Image 1: 8 bit Off and Noise Detection Threshold at the default 50. Exposure of 4 seconds gave 667 sources and platesolve after 2 seconds.
Image 2: 8 bit On and Noise Detection Threshold at the default 50. Exposure of 4 seconds gave an error (no mention about sources) and failed platesolve.
Image 3: this worked. 8 bit On and Noise Detection Threshold at 5. Exposure of 4 seconds gave only 31 sources and plate solve took a lot longer than normal. Exposure of 16 seconds gave 210 sources and platesolve after 4 seconds.
Hope this is enough info.

And to make it complete:
Image 1: 8 bit Off, 4 second exposure, platesolve successful. With 8 bit On, no platesolve
Image 2: 8 bit On, 16 second exposure platesolve successful
Image 1: 8 bit Off, 4 second exposure, platesolve successful. With 8 bit On, no platesolve
Image 2: 8 bit On, 16 second exposure platesolve successful

Re: Plate solve fails on ASI2600MC SharpCap 4
Hi,
unfortunately the JPG file format automatically reduces the image to 8 bit, so I don't think I'm going to find anything useful out from those image files
For me, both of those find ~700 sources (sigma=50) and succeed (but not very fast).
cheers,
Robin

Hi Robin
Prediction is good for here coming evening, so will capture some FITS and share them through WeTransfer.
Any preference in settings or just the same scenario with 8 bit On and Off with sigma=50?

Re: Plate solve fails on ASI2600MC SharpCap 4
Hi,
just use your standard settings for deep sky (presumaby RAW16 or MONO16, and whatever gain/exposure/output format you prefer).
I've spotted another thread which I think is the same problem, so I am going to reset the option to 'Off by default' - this will switch it off for everyone when they next update to a new version and then those who really want it can switch it back on.
cheers,
Robin

Re: Plate solve fails on ASI2600MC SharpCap 4
Hi Robin
I made test again. Same scenario.
1) 8 bit Off with default sigma = 50: successful and fast plate solve with 4 seconds exposure.
2) 8 bit On with default sigma = 50: fail. Message: Failed to read xylist and fail plate solve: No solution within 15 degrees
3) 8 bit On with sigma = 5: successful and plate solve with 4 seconds
4) 8 bit on with default sigma = 50: only with 32 seconds a successful plate solve.
In the RAR file both the 4 sec and 32 sec exposure. Ignore the names of the FITS, those are not correct I see now
Link to testfiles with FITS and camera settings: https://we.tl/t-Zd2Ab3D2sh (you have to agree before the download can begin)
Note: a dual narrowband filter is used. Normally my plate solve times are around 2 seconds.

Hi Menno,
yep, I see pretty much the same testing here with those files - thanks for sharing. The latest update turning off 8-bit by default is now out and should resolve most of the issues.
cheers,
Robin
