MoveAxis not supported iEQ45 8406HC

#1

Post by Dan M »

Am having an issue getting my iOptron iEQ45 with 8406HC (one of the first ones made) to work with sharpcap. Get the error "mount does not support MoveAxis command" on another note- it has similar issues with ascoms new Device Hub. - same issue. Is there any work around for this issue? Or anyone who can fix the driver? There appears to be a move axis type of command in the RS232 programing for the mount. Be nice to be able to use the feature tracking for solar imaging.

Hi Dan,

it looks like your mount doesn't implement the move axis command (which lets SharpCap send a command like 'start rotating the RA axis at a rate of 0.1 degrees per second'). The move axis command is required to allow the direction buttons in the telescope control area in SharpCap work, so as you have noted you will not see those enabled.

There are two other ways to tell the mount to move - you can start a GOTO movement by sending target RA/Dec co-ordinates, but that's not suitable for the direction keys or for guiding functionality.

The final way is 'pulse guiding' that's the way that applications like PHD2 control the mount to make it guide if you are not using an ST4 cable. I expect your ASCOM driver will support pulse guiding, so you ought to be able to get that to work in the feature tracking window - the only problem is that the pulse guiding movement rate will be very slow - it may not be fast enough for the guiding calibration process to complete.

It does look as though there is a way in the command language to send the sort of movement commands that SharpCap needs, but in order to take advantage of that, someone would have to write a new ASCOM driver from scratch based on the command language documentation (this has happened for other mounts like Skywatcher and Meade, but I am not aware of a project of this sort for iOptron mounts).

I think, in summary, that you may not be able to get the guiding feature to work on your mount, although it may be worth a try using the 'pulse guiding' option.

Another option would be if your camera and mount both have ST4 guiding ports and you are using an Altair, QHY or ZWO camera. SharpCap can control the ST4 ports on these cameras - connect the ST4 cable from the camera to the mount, and choose 'On Camera ST4' as the mount choice in the SharpCap hardware settings. SharpCap should then be able to nudge the mount by sending ST4 signals.

cheers,

Robin
