Ok, what's happening there is that it is hunting backwards and forwards trying to auto-expose to a level of 50% histogram and instead of getting closer to the target each attempt is getting further away. I will tweak that with a new algorithm (interpolation) if it has already bracketed the target by having one measurement each side, which should ensure convergence. I had also better increase the target level to 66% as the black level reading seems to go up quite high for high gains.
