Plate Solve with negative Declination

#1

Post by asquecco »

Hello,
I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if it's a bug, but when I try to solve this image:
https://imgur.com/a/OV8hcc6
SharpCap solve it this way: https://imgur.com/a/8DoR1Dk
Solution : RA=04:37:48,Dec=03:31:33S (J2000)
Field of View : 0,27x0,15 degrees
Time : Fri, 13 Nov 2020 22:46:15 GMT
Orientation : up is 330,2 degrees E of N
but the correct coordinates are:
Center (RA, hms): 04h 37m 48.006s
Center (Dec, dms): -03° 31' 33.352"

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

if you look closely, SharpCap is reporting the declination as

03:31:33S

Note the S at the end, which indicates South of the celestial equator. So effectively this is -03:31:33, just using N/S instead of +/-.

In SharpCap 3.3 I have changed this to use +/-.

cheers,

Robin

Sorry, still fighting with this issue.
This time the Dec is reported as N but it should be S instead:
Solution : RA=23:53:52,Dec=00:42:24N (J2000)
Field of View : 0,27x0,15 degrees
Time : Thu, 19 Nov 2020 12:04:16 GMT
Orientation : up is 329,2 degrees E of N

Hi,

can you send me a copy of the image that is causing the problem and also the full SharpCap log captured after the problems occurred – that should have lots of lines in it with information about the plate solve progress and results which will help me track down what is going wrong.

Cheers, Robin

Hi,

thanks for the info – I've tracked it down to a problem reading the declination value from the plate solving output when the declination is between -1S and 0 degrees. If the declination is greater than 0° or anywhere less than -1° then the bug doesn't happen. I will be fixing this in SharpCap 3.3.

Cheers, Robin
